absolutely dreadful experience! my room had a musty smell and was incredibly tiny. i expected a delightful welcome gift to make amends for the discomfort, but no, just ordinary service instead. while the outdoor onsen had a nice ambiance, i couldn't enjoy it properly due to the mixed gender setup. i almost gave a decent review, but really couldn't.

The local eats were a culinary adventure! The shabu-shabu dinner at ¥5,500 per person was a standout, and the boiled eggs cooked in spring water offered a quirky snack. The atmosphere? Picture-perfect mountain vibes, with the river adding to the tranquility.
A cheeky heads-up, the bigger onsen pools are mostly mixed gender, aside from a brief female-only window. And let’s not forget the musty smell in the room. still, everything else sparkled under those mountain stars.

Finding Kurokawa Onsen Oku No Yu with our car was a bit tricky. The narrow roads made driving challenging, but once we arrived, the natural beauty of the area was stunning. We checked in early and left our luggage, then explored the nearby shops. however, many were closed and we struggled to find lunch until we settled on a tofu restaurant. Our room was clean and spacious, adorned with tatami mats. The Yukata provided added to the authentic experience. The onsen was the highlight! We especially loved the private onsen option, but availability during peak hours was an issue. The meals included were impressive, with both dinner and breakfast being beautifully presented and delicious. The staff were polite and helpful, mainly communicating in English. One downside was the noise from leaf blowers and missed dinner options that evening. Despite a few hiccups, the overall character of the ryokan and delicious food made our stay enjoyable.

We soaked under the stars in that mixed outdoor bath, y'all! It's like the mountains cradle you in peace. And that shabu-shabu dinner? Bless your heart, it was a feast! Just a lil’ heads-up, finding the ryokan took some wrangling. Worth it for those memories, though. Can’t stop thinkin’ ‘bout those hot pools!
